From the year 1958, a law was enacted in France that a vehicle owner must insure his vehicle. The least insurance accepted is a third-party insurance. That means that it is a criminal offense to step into the road in France without an auto insurance. So what happens if you are found driving an uninsured car in France?
1) Fine: If you are found with a car that is not insured on a French road, you would be slammed with a fine of €3750. That's a huge fine to pay.
2) Suspension of your driving license: when a person is caught driving a vehicle that is not insured in France, they don't only hit you with a fine, they also suspend your driver's license. It is a bigger crime to drive without a driver's license. This automatically means that you are not eligible to drive in the country any longer.
3) Confiscation of car: Apart from the two punishments above, the third section is for the authorities to confiscate your car. I believe to get it back would require something huge from you.
Those are the measures adopted by the French government to curb the practice of driving without an insurance plan.
