Many people assume that they already have liability insurance just because they drive a car. This is not always the case. You do need liability insurance, but if you're like most people you may not even know what it is. This article will give you an overview of liability insurance, why you need it and some things that you should consider before purchasing your next policy.

Bodily Injury Liability. Property damage liability is just the same as bodily injury liability except with physical injury coverage. Bodily harm, liability covers your own personal property that's been damaged or stolen from an insured person or vehicle. Property damage coverage also covers other people's personal property that has been damaged or stolen from an insured person or vehicle.

Underinsured Motorist Insurance. In order to legally be able to drive, in every state you must have at least liability and uninsured motorist coverage. This will help you pay for any damages you incur in an accident that was caused by an uninsured driver. Without this coverage you could be sued for medical bills and out-of-pocket expenses that exceed your insurance policy's limits.

Uninsured Motorist Insurance. This type of insurance is basically required for anyone who is operating a vehicle in California. Basically, it covers any injuries or damages that you suffer from as the result of being hit by an uninsured driver. In addition, it will also cover your medical bills, lost wages and any pain and suffering that you may suffer as a result of the accident. The amount that you will be paid for uninsured motorist coverage depends on the value of the vehicle you are driving and the age and gender of the driver at the time of the accident. Underinsured Motorist coverage is not required in California.

No Fault Insurance. California drivers involved in an accident must have insurance coverage even if it is not fault insurance. By law, all drivers involved in an accident must have insurance. By having insurance you are protecting yourself against the financial burden of any legal costs that may be filed against you.

Carrying more than the minimum required liability coverage does not help you in the event of an accident. It is better to have the proper insurance coverage and not carry anything less than liability and uninsured motorist insurance. If you own a vehicle, you should always weigh the pros and cons before deciding to carry just the bare minimums.
