If you're like most people, the term "insurance agent" probably conjures up images of a slick-talking salesman. In reality, that's not too far off the mark — insurance agents are salespeople who sell insurance policies to cover all contingencies in life. It's a lucrative profession: if you can convince people that these policies are their best option for both security and peace of mind, then you'll find an awful lot of work waiting for you! Of course, it doesn't hurt if you know your way around binder products such as whole life and mortgage protection plans. But even without that knowledge, it's entirely possible to learn about them on your own time.

If you're interested in a career as insurance agent, the first step is to decide which kind of policy you'd like to sell. The primary types are life insurance and property and casualty — if you decide on this latter one, you'll have to spend time studying commercial auto insurance policies, as well. Once that decision is made, the next step is to determine the scope of your business. For example, do you want to work for a particular agency for the rest of your life? Or would you rather strike out on your own? It's still possible to do so even if poor credit has left you with less-than-perfect credit history.

The final step before taking your business live is to get an insurance license.
