Things that can't be covered by health insurance are varied and it is important to understand what is not covered before you make an appointment to see the doctor. If you think about it, there are many things that have nothing to do with your health, yet for some reason need treatment or testing--things like glasses and contact lenses.

It's also important to remember that your health insurance only covers certain types of treatments or illnesses, so just in case you need something not covered by your plan, be sure to apply for a supplemental policy which would cover anything from colds and allergies up through pre-existing conditions.

If you are in the UK and have a private health insurance policy, always check with your insurer before treatment what is covered. Even if it is in your plan document, check--because policies do change and you may find that something that used to be covered is no longer included.

Be sure to read this list of things not covered by health insurance carefully before you go out and spend a small fortune on medical expenses:

1. Prescription glasses, contact lenses or laser eye surgery- though your eye doctor's office may offer discounts for paying cash rather than using your health insurance.
2. Homeopathic remedies, diet pills and other natural products- because these may not be covered by your plan.
3. Chemo- mind you, some cancer treatments are covered, but there are things like chemotherapy drugs that will not be covered as they are considered non prescription medicine.
4. Routine physical exams with the doctor such as a check-up or pap smear 5. You're in a car accident and your health insurance company refuses to pay for the damages to your car
6. Cosmetic surgery- both medical and non medical can be tricky--a few policies don't cover any type of plastic surgery whatsoever, others won't pay for cosmetic surgery where there is no medical need, which would include tummy tucks and breast enlargements
