To file your federal tax return, you need to know if you are required to file a return. Filing a federal tax return is generally required if your gross income was more than the filing threshold limits.

To determine if you have to file a federal tax return, use the following guidelines:
  • If married filing jointly and both spouses work and both made an income over the filing threshold limit of $20,000 in 2018 ($24,000 in 2017) - then they will have to file taxes.
  • If one spouse files as head of household with an income over the filing threshold limit of $13,600 in 2018 ($16,200 in 2017) - then they will have to file taxes.
  • If your income was $10,000 or over in 2017 (in 2018 it would be an income of $12,000) and you are single, married filing jointly or head of household - then you will have to file taxes.
-If your income was $5,000 or over in 2017 (in 2018 it would be an income of $6,000) and you are single and under 65 years of age - then you will have to file taxes.
- If your gross income is more than the sum of the standard deduction plus the personal exemption for yourself and spouse/head of household - then you might have to file a tax return.
