The penetration rate of Insurance in Nigeria is very low. People don't care about insurance. That's one part of it. Health insurance is a complete taboo for most Nigerian citizens. They don't want to hear much at all. Even when the government has created the National Health Insurance Scheme which all civil servants are automatically holders, they don't know what it is, how it benefits them, and how to take advantage of it.

Examining closely, what could be the major cause of the low patronage of h health insurance in Nigeria? I think one of the major proponents of this backward trend in health insurance is religious and cultural beliefs. Nigeria is a society that is very religious with strong cultural beliefs. This has affected our approach to issues. For instance, a typical Nigerian runs to either a church or a mosque with the slight feeling of a headache. With this approach, hospital and health insurance are a complete No.

The solution is to engage the religious and cultural leaders to help create awareness of the need to take advantage of the conventional health system and the health insurance coverage system put in place by the government. It is a matter of urgency.
