Having a health insurance plan linked to Medicare might not cover you if you travel outside of the US.

Some people may think that having a Medicare health insurance plan is the same as having full coverage in areas outside of the United States, but it turns out that’s not always true. The purpose of this post is to discuss whether or not your US-based insurance will be effective when traveling abroad, and how you can prepare for potential situations like being injured or taken ill in another country.

If you plan on retiring abroad and want to continue using Medicare as your primary insurance provider, we recommend reviewing the terms and conditions of your current policy before making any decisions about where to live. This will help you determine if your health insurer is required to have a second plan in place for you, if you will be covered for preventive care as well as medical treatment, and the level of coverage that you can expect.

The bottom line is that your Medicare health insurance might not cover you during a trip outside of the United States. While most people assume they are covered under the Affordable Care Act (often referred to as Obamacare), this is not always the case.
