A collision insurance policy covers damage to another person's property such as a vehicle, or injury to someone or their property. Comprehensive coverage typically includes damage from fire, theft, vandalism and natural incidents that are not covered by collision insurance.

Liability insurance pays any claims from third parties arising from an accident that the other party was involved in. This may include compensation for injury and expenses caused by bodily injury claims and damage to property, for example if a person was hit by your car.

Liability coverage is designed to protect you from third-party claims for damages not related to the car itself and include personal injury claims as well as legal defense costs.

A collision or comprehensive insurance covers damage to the car or other vehicle, for example, when you damage someone else's property. Often referred to as physical damage coverage, this is an optional coverage with a premium that varies depending on the value of your vehicle, the type of policy you have and the state where you live. In most places if you choose not to have comprehensive insurance, either because it's expensive or because you don't drive enough miles annually to make it worth your while, your lien-holder will require that you pay for physical damage coverage in other ways.
