When it comes to negotiating salaries, one important component to consider is your transportation costs to and fro work for the whole month. The difference between the actual amount paid and your cost of transportation is the real amount you are paid. If you don't get this right, you would just realize that your employer is just giving you transport money to come work for him/ her. You have to, first of all, know the real cost of you getting to that proposed workplace in the worst possible conditions. This can be rain, scarcity of fuel, and so on.

I think the ideal budget for transport from your income monthly should not be more than 10- 15% of the monthly income. Anything beyond that, you are not being paid a salary but being given transport money. When you subtract your transport fare monthly from your monthly income, something substantial should remain for you to use and take care of other expenses for that month. If your transportation is more than 10-15% of your monthly income, you should consider quitting that job or relocating to live closer to the workplace. Don't our calculations again and see if your job is worth it.

For many people, their transport to work is one of their biggest monthly expenses. But how much of your income should you be spending on your commute?

There's no easy answer, as it depends on a number of factors, including your income, the cost of living in your area, and the cost of public transport. However, a good rule of thumb is to spend no more than 10% of your income on your transport to work.

If you're spending more than 10% of your income on your commute, it's time to reevaluate your options. Are there cheaper public transport options available? Could you carpool with colleagues or friends? Could you move closer to your workplace?

Making small changes to your transport to work can make a big difference to your monthly budget. And, if you can free up some extra cash, you can use it to improve your lifestyle in other ways, such as taking a class, going on vacation, or saving for retirement.

I totally agree with you one of the areas that an employee should always consider before taking up a job should be the transportation fare to and fro the job.

As your rightly stated if you are paying high transport fare then your salary y might not take you home so it is always good to start a job that the transportation fare will take about 10 to 15% of the whole package because it will not make any sense working and half of the salary goes on transportation if possible it is always good to pick the job in your residential area to avoid high cost of transportation.
