As a vehicle owner in Ontario Canada you would need to have an
Automobile insurance in place before driving your car. This is because under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act of Ontario, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle that is not insured.

The Automobile Insurance Act of Ontario requires that every car or motor vehicle insurance policy should have the following or meet the below requirements

There should be a third Party Liability coverage which should be minimum of $200,000

The should be an uninsured automobile coverage
Statutory Accident Benefits coverage in place

And there should be a direct Compensation which will be property Damage coverage

The law makes it known that It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that they are properly insured. so that when one stops by instituted authories or even the police, you should be able to show them your insurance card that your vehicle has been insured according to requirements

However, If you do not have your insurance card with you at the time you are stopped for it, you would be given abiut 48 hours or 2 days to make your insurance card available at the police statio. This is to get you at the good side of the law.
